Question

Explain how Carbon dioxide is able to control fires.
Medium

Solution

Carbon dioxide is the best extinguisher for fires involving electrical equipment and combustible materials such as gasoline. Because carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen, it blankets the fire. The fire is controlled because there is no contact between the fuel and the oxygen. Carbon dioxide has the extra benefit of not causing damage to electrical equipment in most circumstances.
