Solution

The village elders occupied the back benches in the classroom to attend the last lesson delivered by M. Hamel because they felt sorry for not attending the school ever. They wanted to show their sympathy and respect for the teachers. They thanked M. Hamel for his long and devoted service of forty years to teaching the children of the school.
