The peddler comes out as a person with a subtle sense of humour. How does this serve in lightening the seriousness of the theme of the story and also endear him to us?
Easy

Solution

The peddler doesn't seem like a funny person, yet his perception of the world as a big rattrap contains a hint of humour. This idea makes him happy since it gives him liberty to think negatively about the world that doesn't treat him well. It is obvious that whenever he is upset, he shelters behind the belief that the world is a rattrap and that he is only prey in the web of deception that his cunning mind has spun. By doing so, he lightens the tone and meaning of the story and  endears us to him.
