How would you explain the reluctance of the soldier to leave the shelter of the doctor’s home even when he knew he could not stay there without risk to the doctor and himself?

Solution

The odds of survival of the American patient were quite small. But the patient lives because to the tireless efforts of Dr. Sadao and his wife. He became conscious and realised a Japanese family had saved him. He believed that the military would soon take him into custody since there were political tensions between America and Japan and that they were at war. However, the family's care and how he was handled led him to assume otherwise, and he hoped to live. The family that put their life in danger to save him touched him deeply. While leaving his heart was flooded with gratitude for the family and he pushed himself to depart so that the threat that lingered over the family would lessen.
