(a) What does the phrase, ‘familiar ache’ mean?

By the phrase ‘familiar ache’ the poet means the pain that she had already felt in her childhood. The pain was due to the fear of getting separated from her mother and the realization that she had not cared enough for her. She suppressed it by smiling again and again at her and by promising to meet her soon.
