Sinhala and Sri Lankan Tamils were the primcipal players in the racial conflict in Sri Lanka. After gaining its independence, the Sinhala majority in Sri Lanka, which was hostile toward the Tamil immigrants from India who had come to live there, controlled the country's politics. Sinhalese believed that only they owned Sri Lanka, and that Tamils should not receive any kind of favour. This sparked "ethnic war," or militant Tamil nationalism.
Sri Lanka has maintained a democratic political system, had significant economic growth, and attained a high level of human development despite the repercussions of internal strife.
