The Congress Party's control over the Indian Party System came to an end with its defeat in 1989. Congress, however, still has an impact on national politics:
1. After the 1991 midterm elections, Congress performed better and regained power.
2. It backed the United Front administration.
3. The left continued to back the non-Congress government in 1996, but this time Congress did as well because both parties wanted to keep the BJP out of power.
4. As a result, even after 1989, Congress continued to play a significant role in governing the nation more often than any other party. However, it no longer has the same level of importance in the party system as it once did.
