Question

Describe fertilization in human female. What happens to the corpus luteum after the successful and unsuccessful fertilization of the ovum?
Hard

Solution

Fertilization process takes place when the female gamete ovum fuses with the male gamete sperm to form diploid zygote. (i) In case of fertilization, the corpus luteum continues secreting progesterone which is required for the maintenance of endometrium during pregnancy. (ii) In the absence of fertilization, the corpus luteum degenerates and gets converted into corpus albicans. Deficiency of progesterone causes disintegration of the endometrium leading to menstruation and thus, a new cycle starts.
