Question

A bullet of mass 20 g is fired with a velocity of 100 m/s. If the mass of the gun is 10 kg, what would be the recoil velocity of the gun?
Hard

Solution

Given, Mass of bullet =20g m₁= 0.02kg To find: Recoil Velocity u₁ = 0m/s v₁ = 150m/s Mass of the gun, m₂ = 2kg u₂ = 0m/s v₂ = v. By the law of conservation of momentum, m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ + m₂v₂ 0.02 x 0+2 x 0=0.02 x 150+2 x v 0 + 0 = 3 + 2v 3 = 2v 3/2 = v 1.5 = v Hence, recoil velocity=1.5m/s
