Modern genetics is based on the gene and fundamental unit is heredity. Mendel was the first to recognise the existence of gene. He concluded that the heredity determinants of a particular nature is known as genes. In dihybrid crosses Mendel found 9:3:3:1 ratio in the F2 generation, which in reality is 3:1 ratio combined at random.

From the cross, it can be seen that the first two phenotypes have a bigger ratio compared the third and fourth phenotypes. This shows that the first two phenotypes are the same as the parental phenotype, whereas the third and fourth phenotypes are recombinants.
