A Universal Adult Franchise is the most important component of a democracy. Since the foundation of democracy is laid on the principle of equality and fairness, the people should be assured of this in all contexts. The Indian Constitution has approved Universal Adult Franchise as the foundation for elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. The people directly elect the members of the Lok Sabha.
1. Since democracy is about its people and their demands, the Lok Sabha is called the “house of the people”.
2. Members running for office are selected from a specific regional district.
3.The members of the constituency will now exercise their right to vote to decide the government officials who will govern the country.
4. If there was no universal adult franchise, the right to vote would not exist. Therefore universal adult suffrage is important in a democracy.
